헨더슨은 네바다에서 가장 살기 좋은 도시라고 해도 과언이 아니다. 인구 35만 명 중 백인이 65%로 절반 이상을 차지하고, 아시안은 9.5% 정도이다. 18세 이상이 78.6%를 차지하고 학사 이상의 인구가 36.8%로 상당히 높은 비율이다. 통계가 말해 주듯이 헨더슨은 매우 안정적인 도시이다. 교육 환경도 매우 우수하기 때문에 한인들이 매우 선호한다.

헨더슨 시를 이끌어가는 수장 미셸 로메로(Michelle Romero) 시장은 2024년 전국 공립 차터스쿨연합(National Alliance For Public Charter Schools)으로부터 차터스쿨 챔피언상을 수상했다. 그녀는 양질의 공교육을 받을 수 있는 기회를 지원하는 것을 교육의 전략적 우선 순위로 두고 있다. 

로메로 시장은 10여년간 헨더슨 재개발청장을 역임했다. 그녀의 이러한 경력은 헨더슨의 지역 개발에 큰 공을 세웠다. 다운타운 헨더슨, 워터 스트리트 지구를 비롯한 도시의 노후된 지역을 새롭게 개발하는 프로젝트를 진행했다. 지역 개발은 환경 개선뿐만 아니라, 수천 개의 일자리와 수십 억 달러의 투자를 만들어내기 때문에 헨더슨의 경제 발전에도 크게 기여하게 된다. 

로메로 시장은 Upper Lowa University에서 행정학을 전공했고 경제 개발 및 계획 분야를 다루는 미셸 로메로 컨설팅의 대표이며 2022년에 헨더슨 시장으로 선출되었다.  

로메로 시장과의 인터뷰를 통해 시정 운영에 관한 주요 사안들을 들어본다.

Q: 시정을 운영하면서 헨더슨 시민들을 위해 가장 중점을 두는 것은?

A: 바로 우리의 전략적 우선순위는 ‘공공 안전’입니다. 경찰관과 소방관의 수를 늘리기 위해 채용 규모를 확대했습니다. 또한, 경찰관과 소방관은 직무 수행 중에 안전과 지원을 받을 수 있어야 합니다. 저는 지역 주민들이 경찰관을 알고 신뢰하는 지역사회 치안 활동이 데이터와 기술을 결합하여 우리의 미래를 만들어 나가는 데 중요한 역할을 해야 한다고 생각합니다. 우리가 전국에서 가장 안전한 도시 중 하나로 인정받는 지역 사회에 살고 있다는 것은 큰 행운입니다.

Q: 최근 헨더슨에도 유입 인구가 크게 늘었다고 알고 있다. 도시 기반 시설은 어떻게 확장되고 있나?

A: 현재 인구 증가율은 1.6~1.8%로, 효과적인 계획을 세울 충분한 시간을 확보할 수 있습니다. 새로운 개발을 제안할 때는 모든 기반 시설 요소를 고려합니다.

Q: 교사 부족, 교육 지원, 학교 범죄 등 교육에 대한 구체적인 지원은 무엇인가?

A: 저희 학군은 클라크 카운티 학군의 관할 하에 있습니다. 하지만 양질의 교육이 전략적 우선순위이기 때문에, 저희는 지역사회 교육 자문 위원회를 구성하여 헨더슨 지역 학교에 다양한 필요에 따른 보조금을 지원해 왔습니다. 작년에 헨더슨 시는 차터 스쿨 관리 기관(Charter School Authority)으로 지정되어, 저희는 헨더슨 지역 차터 스쿨을 확장할 수 있게 되었습니다. 

Q: 한인 사회를 포함한 아시아인들에게 도움이 되는 정책이 있는가?

A: 모든 정책은 다양한 문화를 지원합니다. 인종에 관계없이 대부분의 사람들은 안전, 교육, 주택 옵션, 그리고 세계적인 수준의 편의시설을 중요하게 생각하는데, 이는 우리 헨더슨 시의 가장 뛰어난 분야입니다. 

Q: 시장으로서 가장 보람 있는 점은?

A: 사람들을 도울 수 있다는 것입니다. 시민들이 가장 안전하게 거주할 수 있고, 그들이 사랑하는 자녀들의 교육에 무엇보다도 중점을 두며, 미국에서 가장 살기 좋은 도시의 시민이라는 자부심을 지속적으로 존중하고 싶습니다.

It is no exaggeration to say that Henderson is the best city to live in within Nevada. Of its population of 350,000, over half—65%—are white, and about 9.5% are Asian. Adults aged 18 and over make up 78.6% of the population, and 36.8% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, which is a notably high percentage. As these statistics suggest, Henderson is a very stable city. Its excellent educational environment also makes it a highly preferred location among Korean residents.

The city is led by Mayor Michelle Romero, who in 2024 received the Charter School Champion Award from the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. She prioritizes providing opportunities for access to quality public education as a key strategic goal in education policy.

Mayor Romero served as the Director of Redevelopment for the City of Henderson for over a decade. Her experience has greatly contributed to the city's regional development. She led projects to revitalize aging areas of the city, including Downtown Henderson and the Water Street District. Such development efforts not only improve the environment but also create thousands of jobs and bring in billions of dollars in investment, thus making a significant contribution to Henderson’s economic growth.

Mayor Romero majored in Public Administration at Upper Iowa University. She is the head of Michelle Romero Consulting, which specializes in economic development and planning, and she was elected mayor of Henderson in 2022.

Through an interview with Mayor Romero, we take a closer look at key issues regarding the city’s administration.

Q: What is the most important issue for the citizens of Henderson? 

A: Public Safety , which is one of our strategic priorities. In order to increase the number of both police officers and fire fighters we have expanded our recruiting efforts resulting in larger graduating classes. Additionally, our police officers and fire fighters need to feel safe and supported while performing their jobs. I believe that community policing, where neighbors know and trust their officers, combined with data and technology, needs to play a leading role in how we craft our future.  We are fortunate to live in a community that is nationally recognized as one of the safest cities in the nation.

 Q: I understand that the population of Henderson has increased significantly. How is the city’s infrastructure being expanded? 

A: Our current growth rate is 1.6 to 1.8 percent which allows us ample time to plan effectively.  All infrastructure factors are considered when new development is proposed.

Q: What specific support is being provided for education, such as teacher shortages, educational support, and school crime? 

A: Our school district is under the authority of the Clark County School District.  However, since quality education is a strategic priority, we formed a Community Education Advisory Board which has provided grants to Henderson schools for a variety of needs. Last year the city became a Charter School Authority, allowing us to expand charter schools in Henderson.

Q: Are there any policies that benefit Asians, including the Korean community? 

A: All our policies support a diversity of cultures.  Most people regardless of ethnicity look at safety, education, housing options and world class amenities which are areas our city excels in.  

Q: What is the most rewarding thing about being mayor?

A:  Being able to help people. I want to ensure that our residents can live in the safest environment possible, place the utmost importance on the education of the children they love, and continue to honor their pride in being citizens of one of the best cities to live in America.
