싱그러운 초록빛 만끽! 남부 네바다의 ‘특별한 정원’

The 'Special Gardens' of Southern Nevada.

베가스의 5월은 서서히 더워지기 시작한다. 그래도 아직은 지치지 않고 푸르른 여유를 누릴 수 있는 봄의 끝자락이다. 남부 네바다는 척박한 사막의 지형을 커버하기 위해 더많은 녹지를 조성하고, 대형 정원도 곳곳에 자리한다.

이번에는 학교 캠퍼스 안에 자리한 드넓은 식물 정원과 헨더슨에 위치한 선인장 군락 정원과 생태계 보존 가든 등을 소개한다. 

*Baepler Xeric Garden(베이플러 제릭 가든)

Baepler Xeric Garden

제릭(Xeric)이라는 이름은 ‘건조한’을 뜻하는 그리스어로 가뭄에 강한 식물과 효율적인 관개 시스템을 결합하여 매력적인 조경 시스템을 만들어낸다는 의미를 가졌다. 배릭 자연사 박물관 동쪽에 위치한 이 가든은 1.5에이커에 이른다. UNLV 학생들 뿐만 아니라 CSN 대학의 원예학과 학생들에게 좋은 실험실 역할을 한다. 

정원에는 넉넉한 산책로, 벤치, 운치있는 다리 등 방문객들에게 좋은 산책 코스가 되어준다. 자연사 박물관과 해리 리드 환경 연구 센터의 확장 공간으로 설계된 이 정원에는 호주, 남미, 멕시코, 지중해 연안의 식물과 북미 4개 사막 지역에서 자생하는 식물들이 서식하고 있다. 블루 유카, 아가베, 유칼립투스, 호호바, 크레오소트 관목 등을 관람할 수 있다.

*Acacia Demonstration Garden(아카시아 시범 정원)

헨더슨의 조용한 주거 지역에 자리잡은 이 공원은 놀이터와 워터파크, 축구장, 야구장, 반려견 고우언 그리고 산책로까지 갖춰진 16에이커 규모의 대형 공원이다.

헨더슨시와 지역 단체들의 협력으로 탄생한 아카시아 시범 공원은 알러지 친화적인 식물, 민속식물학, 지중해 식물, 토종 식물 등 다양한 수종을 경험할 수 있다. 아름다운 벤치와 정자 등이 있어서 산책 코스로 매우 적합하다.

*Ethel M Botanical Cactus Garden(에델 엠 보테니컬 선인장 가든)

이 정원은 네바다에서 가장 큰 선인장 정원으로 3에이커 규모에서 300종이 넘는 선인장들이 자라고 있다. 미국 남서부 원산지의 선인장과 다육식물은 물론 미국 남서부, 호주, 남미의 사막에서 자라는 수종도 다수 보유하고 있다. 특히 선인장에서 피는 다양한 꽃들을 감상할 수 있다. 

정원을 여유롭게 거닐면서 수제 초콜릿 체험도 이색적이다. 에델 엠 초콜릿은 소량으로 특선 제품을 만든다. 클래식한 방식을 초콜릿을 비롯해서 선인장, 패션푸르트, 바나나 같은 독특한 필링도 사용한다. 

초콜릿 제작 과정도 직접 체험할 수 있고, 시식 체험도 가능하다. 와인과 미모사도 곁들여 마실 수 있다. 오전 10시부터 오후 6시까지 체험 가능. 가든은 무료이며 초콜릿 시식 체험은 25달러, 어린이는 15달러이다.

May in Vegas begins to warm up gradually. However, it’s still the end of spring, where you can enjoy the lushness without feeling worn out. Southern Nevada is enhancing its greenery to cover the barren desert landscape, and large gardens can be found everywhere.

This time, I would like to introduce the vast plant garden located on a school campus, as well as the cactus cluster garden and the ecosystem preservation garden in Henderson.

*Baepler Xeric Garden

The name "Xeric" comes from the Greek word meaning "dry," and it signifies the combination of drought-resistant plants and efficient irrigation systems to create an attractive landscaping system. Located east of the Barrick Natural History Museum, this garden spans 1.5 acres. It serves as a great laboratory not only for UNLV students but also for horticulture students from CSN.

The garden features ample walking paths, benches, and charming bridges, providing excellent walking routes for visitors. Designed as an extension of the Natural History Museum and the Harry Reid Environmental Research Center, this garden is home to plants from Australia, South America, Mexico, and the Mediterranean region, as well as native plants from four desert regions in North America. Visitors can enjoy viewing blue yucca, agave, eucalyptus, jojoba, and creosote bushes, among others.

*Acacia Demonstration Garden

Nestled in a quiet residential area of Henderson, this park is a large 16-acre space that includes a playground, water park, soccer fields, baseball fields, a dog park, and walking trails. 

The Acacia Demonstration Park, created through collaboration between the City of Henderson and local organizations, offers a variety of plant species, including allergy-friendly plants, ethnobotanical plants, Mediterranean plants, and native plants. With beautiful benches and gazebos, it is an excellent spot for walking.

*Ethel M Botanical Cactus Garden

This garden is the largest cactus garden in Nevada, with over 300 species of cacti growing on 3 acres. It features cacti and succulents native to the American Southwest, as well as many species that grow in the deserts of the American Southwest, Australia, and South America. In particular, you can enjoy various flowers blooming on cacti.

It is also unique to experience handmade chocolate while leisurely strolling through the garden. Ethel M Chocolates makes specialty products in small quantities. They use classic chocolate as well as unique fillings such as cactus, passion fruit, and banana.

You can experience the chocolate making process yourself, and you can also taste it. You can also drink it with wine and mimosa. The experience is available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The garden is free, and the chocolate tasting is $25, and children $15.
