서예가 여울 조경분 선생의 서예 신년 개인전
단아하게 한복을 차려입은 고경분 선생
햇살이 유난히 따뜻한 겨울 날, 단아한 느낌의 한 서예가를 만났다. 여울 조경분 선생. “호가 정말 예쁘시네요!” “제가 지은 ‘호’입니다. ‘여울’의 의미처럼 조용하면서도 세차게 흐르는 그 느낌을 담고 싶었어요. 요란하지 않으면서도 살아있는 움직임처럼 그렇게 지내고 싶습니다.”
그 느낌 그대로였다. 일흔이 넘은 나이에도 고요한 기품이 살아 있었다. 아마도 묵직한 먹색을 담은 서예의 깊은 내공이 배어나기 때문이리라.
고 이미경 서예가의 필체를 이어받은 고경분 선생의 작품들
조경분 선생은 30여 년을 샌디에이고에서 뿌리를 내렸었다. 1999년 그녀는 매우 의미있는 일에 도전했다. 샌디에이고 한인들을 위한 라디오 방송국 창립을 도와 제작과 편집 담당을 도맡았다. 2010년에는 글로벌 어린이 재단 샌디에이고 지부 회장을 맡아 굶주리는 세계의 어린이들을 위해 봉사 활동에 정진했다. 조선생의 부군인 조광세 회장 역시 한인회와 한인 리더그룹협의회에서 한인 커뮤니티를 위한 봉사를 꾸준히 이어오고 있다. 그 또한 한문 서예를 즐긴다.
그리고 이제 베가스에 정착한 지 3년 정도 되었다. 서예에 입문한 지는 15년. 조선생은 한국의 서예가 이미경 선생으로부터 사사 받은 박용미 선생에게 한글 서예와 사군자를 배웠다. 조선생은 “서예는 이제 저와 한 몸이 되었어요. 먹을 담아 글을 쓰는 일이 너무 좋아서 오랜동안 푹 빠져 살았습니다. 먹을 갈고 붓을 들면 시간 가는 줄을 몰랐답니다. 아이들 키우는 것만큼 행복했어요. 좋아하는 음악과 함께하면 그 순간이 천국처럼 느껴집니다.”라고 서예 사랑하는 마음을 펼쳐 보였다.
라스베이거스의 여유로움을 좋아하는 조선생은 늘 습관처럼 배어있는 봉사의 열정을 다시 꺼내어 활동하기 시작했다. 무료한 시간을 보내는 베가스의 시니어들을 위해 서예와 사군자를 가르치기 시작한 것이다. 지금은 수강생이 26명이나 되는 인기 클래스가 되었다.
조선생은 1월4일 00 라이브러리에서 첫 개인전을 연다. 그 동안 즐겨 읊던 시조와 현/근대시, 그리고 성경 구절 등을 작품 소재로 사용하였고, 매,란,국,죽의 사군자도 선보인다. 30여 점의 작품을 전시한다. 준비위원회 측은 한인 커뮤니티만의 행사로 여겼지만, 도서관 측의 의견으로는 외국인들의 한글에 대한 관심도가 높아서 외국 관람객도 상당할 것이라고 전망한다.
조선생의 필체는 매우 곱다. 여성스러운 서체의 맵시가 한글과 썩 잘 어울린다. 새로운 한 해를 시작하는 때에 고풍스런 전시회 관람도 멋스러운 시간이 될 것이다. “우리의 소중한 한글을 바르게 쓰고 사랑했으면 좋겠습니다. 정성을 담아 준비한 전시회에서 한글의 아름다움을 가득 느끼시길 바래봅니다.” 조선생의 한글에 대한 열정은 그 자체로 아름답다. 열정을 다해 몰두하고 의미를 부여하는 황혼의 삶이 참 근사해 보이는 어느 겨울날이었다.

"Yeowool: The Living Serenity of Calligrapher Yeoul Cho Kyung-bun - A Solo Exhibition of Calligraphy in the New Year"

On a winter day with an unusually warm sun, I had the pleasure of meeting a distinguished calligrapher whose work exuded elegance. Marveling at his creation, I expressed my admiration for the beautiful arc. He humbly responded, "It is the arc I meticulously crafted, intending to convey the serene yet resolute essence of Yeoul. I aspire to live a life that emulates the graceful motion of calligraphy without making unnecessary noise."
The encounter evoked a familiar sentiment within me, as I recognized the enduring dignity that transcends age. Perhaps it is the profound introspection inherent in the art of calligraphy, imbued with the weight of ink, that bestows such timeless grace.
For over three decades, Cho has rooted himself in San Diego. In 1999, he embarked on a profoundly meaningful endeavor, co-founding a radio station for Korean-Americans in San Diego. Assumed the role of production and editing responsibilities, Cho dedicated himself to this venture. In 2010, he furthered his commitment to philanthropy by serving as president of the San Diego branch of the Global Children's Foundation, tirelessly volunteering to alleviate the suffering of underprivileged children worldwide. Cho's father, Cho Kwang-se, has also been actively involved in serving the Korean community through his contributions to the Korean Association and the Korean Leadership Group Association. Additionally, he shares Cho's passion for calligraphy, particularly in the realm of Chinese characters.
Now, having settled in Las Vegas approximately three years ago, Cho continues to pursue his artistic journey. With 15 years of experience in calligraphy, he acquired Korean calligraphy and Four Goonja techniques under the tutelage of Park Yong-mi, who herself was instructed by the esteemed Korean calligrapher Lee Mi-kyung. Reflecting on his journey, Cho remarked, "Courtesy and I have become intertwined. My love for writing with ink has consumed me for an extensive period. When I sharpened my ink and grasped the brush, time seemed to lose its significance. It brought me as much joy as raising my own children. In those blissful moments, accompanied by the melodies I adore, I felt as though I were in heaven."
While enjoying his leisurely days in Las Vegas, Mr. Cho has reignited his passion for volunteer work, a lifelong habit that has become deeply ingrained within him. He now imparts his knowledge of calligraphy and sagunja to seniors in Vegas, enriching their lives and warding off boredom. This endeavor has flourished into a popular class, attracting 26 dedicated students.
I am delighted to share that Mr. Cho will be hosting his inaugural solo exhibition at the Summerlin Library from January 4 to March 17. The exhibition will showcase approximately 30 works, featuring sijo poetry, modern compositions, Bible verses, as well as four emblematic pieces titled "Plum," "Orchid," "Chrysanthemum," and "bamboo." Originally conceived as an event exclusively for the Korean community, the library anticipates significant interest from foreign visitors due to the growing fascination with Hangeul, the Korean alphabet.
Cho's handwriting is exquisitely refined, with a delicate script that harmonizes seamlessly with Hangeul. The exhibition presents a splendid opportunity to appreciate these works of art while also indulging in the allure of antique displays, marking the beginning of a new year. Cho fervently expresses his hope that visitors will not only learn to write Hangeul accurately but also develop a deep appreciation for its beauty through this meticulously prepared exhibition. Witnessing Cho's passion for Hangeul is a captivating experience, illustrating how a single winter day can be transformed into a wondrous celebration of life, where passion and meaning intertwine.
