초창기 라스베이거스는 사막 한가운데 있는 작은 기차역에 불과했다. 1905년 철도 노선이 개통되면서 물과 식량을 보급하는 중간 기착지 역할을 한 것. 주민은 겨우 30명이었다. 그 미약한 시작이 현대에 이르러선 세계적인 도시로 발전했다. 길지 않은 100년의 역사 동안에 우여곡절도 많고 그에 얽힌 에피소드도 무궁무진하다. 나름 차별화된 초기 베가스의 숨어있는 이야기들을 풀어본다.
*라스베이거스의 원천 ‘오아시스’
라스베이거스 밸리에는 10,000년 이상의 인간 역사가 존재한다. 레드락 캐년에서 발견할 수 있듯이 암각화가 그 사실을 증명해준다. 그러한 긴 역사는 사막산 안에 숨겨져 있는 여러 개의 오아시스 때문이다. 원주민인 파이유트족은 수천 년 동안 그 오아시스에 의지해서 삶을 이어 나갔다.
문명인으로 이 지역을 처음 방문한 유럽인은 라파엘 리베라. 그는 1821년 뉴멕시코와 캘리포니아 사이의 무역로인 올드 스페니시 트레일을 정찰하던 중 이 생명의 오아시스를 발견했다. 그는 샘물이 흐르는 초원에서 영감을 받아 이 계곡을 스페인어로 ‘초원’이라는 뜻에서 ‘라스베이거스’라는 이름이 탄생되었다.
*베가스 초기의 재미있는 에피소드
가장 재미있는 초기 이야기 중의 하나는 1940년대에 최초로 문을 연 베가스 웨딩 채플에 대한 것. 이 채플의 오너는 카지노로 달려가 “결혼하고 싶은 사람?”하고 소리치며 다녔다. 술에 취한 도박꾼들에게 호객행위가 먹혀 들어갔고, 이를 시작으로 라스베이거스는 퀵 웨딩 도시로 명성을 떨치게 되었다.

라스베이거스의 도시화가 가속화되면서도 1952년이 되어서야 첫 번째 신호등이 등장했다. 그야말로 자동차는 다니지만 풍경은 서부개척시대와도 같았다. 상징적인 ‘Welcome Las Vegas’ 표지판은 1959년에 세워졌다. 도시로 들어오는 사람을 위한 것이 아니라, 도시를 떠나가는 사람들을 향해 세워졌다는 것이 이색적이다.
1950년대에 라스베이거스는 원자 폭탄 실험을 볼 수 있는 최고의 장소로 마케팅했다. 호텔에서는 "원자 칵테일 파티"를 열었고, 손님들은 네바다 시험장에서 버섯 구름을 바라보며 옥상에서 음료를 마실 수 있었다. 그들은 심지어 "미스 원자 폭탄" 미인 대회 우승자를 선정하기도 했다.

얼마 전 트로피카나 호텔의 폭파 장면이 큰 이벤트로 보였듯이 1980년대 라스베가스에서는 낡은 카지노 건물을 폭파하는 것이 하나의 스펙터클한 이벤트였다.
1993년 듀네스 호텔 & 카지노(Dunes Hotel & Casino)의 폭파가 있었다. 이 폭파 장면은 벨라지오(Bellagio) 건설을 위한 것이었고, 수천 명의 관중들이 지켜보는 가운데 진행되었다. 1996년에는 샌즈 호텔(Sands Hotel)이 폭파되었는데, 이는 베네시안(The Venetian) 리조트를 건설하기 위해서였다.

Las Vegas was just a small train station in the middle of the desert in the early days. When the railroad line opened in 1905, it served as a stopover for water and food. There were only 30 residents. That weak start has developed into a world-class city in modern times. In the short 100 years of history, there are many twists and turns and there are endless episodes related to it. It tells the hidden stories of early Vegas that are differentiated in their own way.

There are more than 10,000 years of human history in the Las Vegas Valley. As can be seen in Red Rock Canyon, rock art proves that fact. Such a long history is due to the number of oases hidden in desert mountains. The indigenous Peyut people relied on the oasis to continue their lives for thousands of years.
Raphael Rivera was the first civilized European to visit the region. He discovered the oasis of life in 1821 while conducting a reconnaissance mission on the Old Spanish Trail, a trade route between New Mexico and California. Inspired by the spring-flowing grasslands, the valley was given the name Las Vegas, which means grasslands in Spanish.
*Funny episodes of early Vegas
One of the funniest early stories is about the Vegas Wedding Chapel, which first opened in the 1940s. The chapel's owner rushed to the casino and shouted, "Who wants to get married?" Drunk gamblers acted upon Las Vegas, starting with it having a reputation as a quick-wedding city.
During the Great Depression in 1931, Nevada legalized gambling to revitalize the economy. At this time, the first casino license was granted at the Northern Club, which, interestingly, was owned by a woman. Marita Wolf was a businesswoman.
Another interesting episode was in 1941 when the first resort-type casino, El Rancho Vegas, opened its doors. It is said that the first day of operation was overrun by so many customers that the staff couldn't handle it. Some of them even slept in parking lots.
Despite the accelerated urbanization of Las Vegas, the first traffic lights did not appear until 1952. Cars drove around, but the landscape was like that of the Western Front. The iconic 'Welcome Las Vegas' sign was erected in 1959. It is unusual that it was built not for people entering the city, but for people leaving the city.
In the 1950s, Las Vegas marketed itself as the best place to see atomic bomb tests. Hotels held "atomic cocktail parties," and guests could drink from rooftops while looking at clouds of mushrooms at Nevada testing sites. They even named the winner of the "Miss Atomic Bomb" beauty contest.

In Las Vegas in the 1980s, bombing an old casino building was a spectacular event, just as the scene of the bombing of a Tropicana hotel recently appeared to be a big event.
In 1993, there was the bombing of the Dunes Hotel & Casino. This bombing scene was for the construction of the Bellagio and took place in the presence of a thousand of spectators. In 1996, the Sands Hotel was built to build The Venetian Resort.
These unique events became a symbolic means of publicity for a new beginning and contributed to the creation of expectations for a new casino by attracting public attention. Ultimately, it was used as a way to show off Las Vegas' constant change and development.
