A Glimpse into the Visionary Leadership of President Lee Sang-hyun at Wongu Oriental Medical University
첫인상부터 비범해 보이는 사람이 있다. 외국인들만 가득한 어느 한 모임에서 언뜻 한국말이 들렸다. 큰 키에 캐주얼한 슈트를 차려 입은 젊은 남자였다. 반가운 마음 먼저 들었다. 두바이와의 사업 교류를 위해 모인 사람들 틈에, 그도 두바이에 대학교를 내고 싶어하는 사업 계획을 가지고 있었다. 그런데 대학교의 종류는 뜻밖에도 ‘한의학’이었다.
그는 헨더슨에 소재한 원구한의대 이상현 총장이다. 이제 30대 중반인데 한 대학의 수장을 맡을 만큼 평범치는 않다. 차분한 분위기로 나긋하게 말을 이어나가는 모습은 한없는 긍정의 모습이다. 마치 도를 닦은 ‘어린 왕자’ 같았다.
어떻게 한의를 하게 되었냐는 물음에 “제가 처음 한의학을 한다고 했을 때 아버님의 반대가 매우 심하셨어요. 아버님은 치과 의사시거든요. 대를 이어 치의학을 하기를 원하셨죠. 그래서 중국 상하이에서 2년 동안 치대에 다니기도 했습니다.” 이총장은 자신의 긴 학문 여정을 잔잔하게 설명했다. 그는 UCLA 바이올로지(Evolution Ecology Biology)학과 출신이다. 집에서는 당연히 의사가 되겠거니 했지만, 엉뚱하게도 한의학 책을 읽다가 매료되어 한의의 길로 들어서게 되었다고 한다. 그래서 에너하임에 소재한 사우스베일로(South Baylo) 한의대에서 공부하게 되었다. “저에게는 한의가 정말 잘 맞았어요. 함께 공부했던 분들에게서 비법도 전수받으면서 열심히 공부했죠.”
한의대 졸업 후 그는 또 하나의 특이한 이력을 갖게 되었다. 한의원에서 일하게 된 것이 아니라, 정신과 병원 안에서 한의사를 시작했다. 통합의학 컨퍼런스에서 만난 정신과 의사와 협업을 하게된 것. 미국이기에 가능한 일이기도 하다. 미국에서는 한의의 효능을 인정하고 정신과나 카이로프랙틱, 피부과, 그리고 종합병원에서도 한의와 협진을 한다. 이총장은 “미국에서 한의를 전공한다고 해서 개업만 하는 것은 아닙니다. 오히려 미 전지역 병원에서 한의사를 구하는 광고가 많죠. 초봉의 경우 5만~6만 달러 정도 받을 수 있습니다.”라고 설명했다.
그는 정신과에서 일하면서 복합적인 치료 방법들을 터득하게 되었다. 정신과 약으로 인한 부작용을 한의로 다스리는 과정에서 환자의 패닉 상태가 매우 호전되기도 하고, 라이프 스타일을 변화시키는 임상적 경험을 하기도 했다. 이총장은 “제 자신도 소심하고 두려운 것이 많은 성격이었는데 환자들과의 대면이 많아지면서 의지가 강해진 것 같습니다. 제가 가장 중점적으로 두고 있는 의료 봉사 활동도 저를 적극적인 마인드로 만들어주는 계기가 되었습니다.”라고 회고했다. 그는 정신과 말고도 카이로프랙틱, 피지컬 테라피, 통증의학 병원에서도 일하면서 다양한 경험을 쌓을 수 있었다.
이총장은 한의학이 좋아서 선택했는데, 너무 테크니션으로만 활동하는 것 같아서 네바다 라이센스를 취득하고 원구한의대 교수로 일하면서 베가스로 오게 되었다. 그에게는 학교를 키우고 싶은 의지가 매우 강하다. 현재 학교에서 운영하는 클리닉은 예약이 꽉 차 있는 상태다. 특히 외국인 환자들이 많다. 이총장은 시간이 허락하는 대로 봉사활동도 왕성히 하고 있다. 의료의 손길이 미치지 못하는 놀스 지역에도 꾸준히 진료 봉사를 하고 있다.
라스베이거스 내의 한인들이 학생으로 지원하냐는 질문에 이 총장은 “가장 큰 난제입니다. 한인들의 관심이 적은 편인데, 미국 내의 한의대라서 그 가치를 잘 인식하지 못하거나 폄하되어 있는 것 같습니다. 저희 학교는 미국 교육부에서 인증하는 침술 및 한의학 인증 위원회(ACAHM)의 인증을 받았고, 유학생을 위해 I-20도 발행합니다. 라이센스를 취득하면 미국 병원에서도 고용이 가능하기 때문에 오히려 폭넓게 일할 기회가 있습니다. 유학생들에게는 성적이 우수한 경우 본교에서 취업 비자를 발급받을 수도 있지요. 학생들이 진로 결정을 원활하게 할 수 있도록 적극적으로 돕습니다. 미국 병원 내에서 일하게 되면 영주권의 기회도 가질 수 있습니다. 그리고 한국의 유학박람회를 통해 유학생 유치 활동을 적극적으로 해나갈 방침입니다.”라고 말했다.
이상현 총장은 원구대의 해외 분교 설립에도 큰 관심을 가지고 있다. 가능한 곳이라면 어디든지 적극적으로 추진하고 있다. 현재 동남아를 중심으로 태국 한의대를 진행중이다.
이상현 총장과 인터뷰하는 내내 평안함이 느껴졌다. 종교에 대해서 묻자, “저의 종교는 ‘한의’입니다.”라고 말하며 활짝 웃었다. “부모님은 불교신자이십니다. 강남에 사시기 때문에 오랫동안 봉은사에 다니시는 모습을 많이 뵈었죠. 그래서 사실 저도 불교 성향이 있는 편입니다. 깊이 명상하는 것을 좋아합니다. 농담 같지만 저는 오직 한의에 푹 빠져 있습니다. 환자들이 호전될 때 큰 기쁨을 느낍니다. 학생들을 가르치면서도 저도 늘 배우는 것이 많은데, 그런 상호작용들이 마음 속에 깊이 다가옵니다.”
잔잔한 어투로 말하는 이상현 총장. 그에게는 왠지 순수한 이미지의 이끌림이 있다. 그 깊은 원천의 힘이 앞으로 펼쳐질 그의 선한 영향력을 품은 행보를 그려보게 한다.

Post-graduation, Lee's professional trajectory took an unconventional turn as he ventured into the realm of psychiatric healthcare, integrating oriental medicine within a psychiatric hospital setting. His collaborations with psychiatrists and his experiences in the United States, where the efficacy of oriental medicine is increasingly acknowledged, further broadened his perspective. Notably, his tenure in psychiatry provided invaluable insights into holistic treatments and catalyzed a transformation in his own outlook, bolstering his resolve to engage in medical volunteer work.
Lee's foray into diverse medical domains, encompassing chiropractic care, physical therapy, and pain medicine, underscored his multifaceted approach to healthcare. His decision to relocate to Las Vegas, where he obtained a Nevada license and assumed the role of a professor at Wongu Oriental Medical University, reflects his unwavering dedication to advancing the field.
