그녀에게서 빛나는 열정을 ‘황혼의 미학’이라고 부르고 싶다. 주체적으로 살아가는 가치와 삶의 비용 가치를 건강하고 아름답게 만들어 가는 그녀의 시간은 아름다운 석양처럼 찬란하다. 그녀는 베가스에서의 삶을 스스로 가꾸며 자신의 일을 당당히 사랑한다.
70세를 바라보는 여정에 들어선 ‘이혜숙’씨는 카지노 ‘딜러’로 여전히 일하고 있다. 갓 서른 넘은 나이에 어린 딸과 함께 도미한 그녀는 LA에서 오랫동안 살았다. 베가스에 오기 전까지 회계사 사무실에서 일했다. 은퇴할 나이에 그녀는 홀연히 라스베이거스로 이주했다. 항상 긍정적이고 성실함이 배어있는 그녀는 집에서만 쉴 생각은 아예 하지 않았다. “뭔가 새로운 일을 하고 싶었어요. 베가스는 호텔이 워낙 많기 때문에 저도 그 안에서 일하고 싶다는 생각이 문득 들었습니다.” 적극적으로 일하기로 결심한 그녀는 사우스 포인트 호텔에서 청소일을 시작했다. “비록 청소하는 일이었지만 그것도 어렵게 취업했어요. 내 집을 청소한다는 마음으로 정말 구석구석 깨끗하게 청소했죠.” 이혜숙씨는 더 멋진 호텔에서 일하고 싶다는 포부를 가졌다.
어려운 과정을 거쳐 윈 호텔에서 일하게 되었다. 그녀에게 불가능이란 없었다. 늘 ‘하면 된다’는 신념으로 문을 두드렸다. 그녀는 “저는 제 할 일도 열심히 했지만, 항상 호텔의 구조를 외우고 있었어요. 그래서 고객들이 길을 물을 때도 친절히 가르쳐 줄 수 있었어요.”라며 부지런한 그녀만의 철학을 설명했다. 그녀는 윈 호텔에서 일하면서 한 단계 더 올라가고 싶은 포부를 가졌다.
그래서 딜러 학교에 입학하게 되었다. “제 나이 또래의 학생은 한 명도 없었어요. 그래도 부끄럽지 않았어요. 열심히 배워서 늦깎이 딜러가 되었습니다.” 현재 그녀는 사하라 호텔에서 카지노 딜러로 일하고 있다. 저녁 8시부터 밤새워 고객들과 게임을 한다. 피곤하지 않냐는 물음에 그녀는 “저는 제 일이 너무 즐거워요. 제 나이에 일을 할 수 있다는 것도 감사하고, 민첩하게 일을 수행할 수 있다는 자부심도 있습니다. 큰 호텔에서 일하는 것도 좋지만, 지금 사하라 호텔에서 일하는 것이 정말 편하고 즐거워요.”라고 말하며 활짝 웃었다. 그녀가 일하는 모습을 지켜볼 때 전혀 나이를 느낄 수가 없었다. 계속 서서 일하는 데도 피곤한 기색조차도 없어 보였다.
그녀는 직장과 가까운 다운타운에 살며 혼자만의 여유를 만끽한다. 거실 가득 화초를 키우며, 나즈막한 사막산의 경치와 노을을 즐긴다. 그 바쁜 와중에도 한인들과 어울리며 전통 춤과 합창 모임에도 적극적이다. 어린이 글로벌재단에서도 활발히 활동한다. 그녀의 도전 정신은 도네이션 과정에서도 빛난다. 사하라 호텔에 직접 어린이 글로벌재단을 소개하며 후원이라는 성과를 이뤄냈다. “안 되는 일이 어디 있겠어요. 부딪혀서 도전하면 다 이루어집니다. 안되면 되게 하라… 저의 강력한 신념입니다.”
그녀는 70이 넘어서도 지금의 일을 계속 이어나가고자 한다. 일하는 삶이 즐거운 사람들의 특권이다. 지는 노을을 보며 쓸쓸함을 느끼는 사람이 있을 테고, 똑같은 노을을 보면서도 찬란하다고 느끼는 사람도 있을 것이다. 인생은 사라지는 것이 아니라, 다시 떠오르는 내일을 준비하는 과정이라 여긴다면, 당신의 시간은 지금부터 시작이다! 그녀의 삶이 그 소중한 시간의 정체를 말해주고 있다.

I want to call her passion 'the aesthetics of the twilight'. Her time to make the value of living independently and the value of cost of life healthy and beautiful is as brilliant as a beautiful sunset. She takes care of her life in Vegas and loves her work proudly.
On her journey towards 70, Lee Hye-sook is still working as a casino dealer. Having just moved to the U.S. with her young daughter at the age of 30, she lived in LA for a long time. Before coming to Vegas, she worked in an accountant's office. At the age of retirement, she moved to Las Vegas without hesitation. Always positive and sincere, she never thought of resting at home. "I wanted to do something new. There are so many hotels in Vegas that I want to work in them, too." Determined to work actively, she began cleaning jobs at the South Point Hotel. "Although it was a cleaning job, I got a hard job. I cleaned every corner really clean with the mindset of cleaning my house." Lee had aspirations to work at a better hotel.
After a difficult process, I got to work at the Wynn Hotel. There was nothing impossible for her. I always knocked on the door with the belief that I could do it. She explained her diligent philosophy, saying, "I have always remembered the structure of the hotel even though I worked hard at my job. So I was able to kindly teach my customers when they asked me for directions." She had aspirations to take her to the next level while working at the Wynn Hotel.
So, I entered a dealer's school. "I wasn't ashamed of myself, though. I learned so hard that I became a late dealer." Now, she works as a casino dealer in a Sahara hotel. She plays games with clients all night from 8 p.m. When asked if she is tired, she said, "I enjoy my job so much. I also appreciate being able to work at my age, and I also have the pride of being able to perform things agile. It's great to work in a big hotel, but I'm really comfortable and enjoying working in a Sahara hotel now." I couldn't feel her age at all when I watched her work. She didn't even look tired even as she continued to stand and work.
She lives in a downtown area close to her office and enjoys her leisure time alone. She grows plants in her living room, and enjoys the scenery and sunset of the desert mountain. Despite her busy schedule, she hangs out with Koreans and is active in traditional dances and choral gatherings. She also works for the Global Foundation for Children. Her spirit of challenge shines even in the process of donation. She introduced the Global Foundation for Children to the Sahara Hotel and achieved the result of sponsorship. "What's not impossible? If you confront and challenge yourself, everything will come true. you can do it… It's my strong belief."
She wants to continue her current work even if she is over 70. Working life is the privilege of those who enjoy it. Some people may feel lonely watching the sunset, and others may feel brilliant while watching the same sunset. If you consider life not to disappear, but to be a process of preparing for a resurgence tomorrow, your time begins now! Her life tells the identity of that precious time.
