네바다에는 크게 두 파트의 대형 관광지가 있다. 네바다의 심장이라고 할 수 있는 라스베이거스와 네바다의 주도 리노의 레이크 타호. 그 외에는 거의 불모지라고 할만큼 갈만한 곳이 마땅치 않다고 많은 사람들이 생각한다. 워낙 사막이 많은 영토라 그럴 수도 있다. 그런 만큼 길을 가다가 예상치 않은 경치가 나타나면 오히려 더 보석같은 느낌이다.
그레이트 베이신(Great Basin). 베가스에서 북동쪽으로 4시간30분 정도를 달리면 공기부터 신선해지는 거대한 산맥이 나타난다. 야생의 고독을 즐기기에 충분하고 큼직한 소나무 숲에서의 산책도 여유롭다. 종유석이 가득한 신비한 리먼(Lehman) 동굴 탐험도 기다린다. 시원한 계곡물에는 송어가 풍부하다.
*가장 어둡고 별이 많다
그레이트 베이신의 백미라고 할 수 있는 것은 바로 별구경. 다섯 개의 야영지에 짐을 풀면 밤마다 하늘에서 우주가 쏟아져 내린다. 48개 주 중 가장 어둡고 별이 가장 많은 하늘을 가졌다. 이 공원은 2016년에 Dark Sky Park로 지정되기도 했는데, 은하수가 정점에 도달하는 여름철에는 6,000개가 넘는 별을 관측할 수 있다. 안드로메다와 은하를 망원경 없이 볼 수 있다.
이 공원의 밤이 아름다운 이유는 높은 사막 지대이면서 공기 중에 전망을 가리는 습기가 거의 없기 때문이다. 그리고 인근의 큰 도시가 전무한 오지이기 때문에 더욱 밤하늘의 별이 빛난다.그래서 수천 년 동안 거의 변하지 않는 하늘 풍경이 가능하다. 천문학 원형 극장에서는 슬라이드쇼와 간단한 강의가 진행되기도 한다.
*다양한 탐험을 할 수 있다
그레이트 베이신 국립공원은 산세가 워낙 수려하기 때문에 하이킹을 즐기기에 부족함이 없다. 기본 하이킹 코스로는 3마일 정도의 ‘Mountain View Nature Trail’가 갖춰져 있다. 리먼 동굴 비지터센터 옆에 위치한다. ‘Sky Islands Forest Trail’도 초급 코스. 거의 수평의 코스로 휠체어도 접근이 가능하다. 중급으로는 고산 호수와 산맥의 봉우리를 감상할 수 있는 ‘Alpine Lakes Trail’, 정상을 바라볼 수 있는 ‘Bristlecone Interpretive Trail’이 있다. 이 공원의 가장 높은 봉우리에 다다르는 ‘Wheeler Park Summit Trail’은 가장 난이도가 높은 코스이다.

Nevada has two major tourist destinations. There's Las Vegas, which could be called the heart of Nevada, and Lake Tahoe near the state capital Reno. Many people think there's hardly anywhere else worth visiting to the point where the rest could be called a wasteland. This might be because much of the territory is deserted. But because of this, when unexpected scenery appears along the way, it feels even more like finding a hidden gem.
Great Basin. About 4 hours and 30 minutes northeast of Vegas, a massive mountain range appears where the air becomes fresh. It's perfect for enjoying solitary wilderness, and walks through the large pine forests are leisurely. The mysterious Lehman Cave, filled with stalactites, awaits exploration. The cool valley streams are rich with trout.
Stargazing is the highlight of Great Basin. When you set up camps at any of the five campgrounds, the universe pours down from the sky every night. Among the 48 states, it has the darkest sky with the most stars. The park was designated as a Dark Sky Park in 2016, and during summer when the Milky Way reaches its peak, you can observe more than 6,000 stars. You can see Andromeda and the galaxy without a telescope.
The nights in this park are beautiful because it's in a high desert region with almost no moisture in the air to obstruct the view. And because it's a remote area with no major cities nearby, the stars in the night sky shine even brighter. This allows for a sky view that has remained almost unchanged for thousands of years. The astronomy amphitheater sometimes offers slideshows and brief lectures.
Great Basin National Park offers excellent hiking opportunities due to its magnificent mountain landscape. For a basic hiking course, there's the 'Mountain View Nature Trail' which is about 3 miles long. It's located next to the Lehman Cave Visitor Center. The 'Sky Islands Forest Trail' is also a beginner's course. It's almost level and wheelchair accessible. For intermediate levels, there's the 'Alpine Lakes Trail' where you can enjoy views of alpine lakes and mountain peaks, and the 'Bristlecone Interpretive Trail' which offers views of the summit. The 'Wheeler Park Summit Trail', which reaches the park's highest peak, is the most challenging course.
This national park has multiple campgrounds and RV parks.
